A video from 2007 is circulating again, showing former President Bill Clinton praising Abdul El-Sayed during the University of Michigan’s commencement ceremony. El-Sayed, then a graduating senior selected to deliver the student address, spoke about overcoming religious and cultural divisions. Clinton was so impressed that he told the audience he wished people around the world could have heard El-Sayed’s remarks. Nearly two decades later, El-Sayed is the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate in Michigan, facing Republican Mike Rogers in today’s November 3 election. El-Sayed has also recalled that Clinton privately encouraged him to consider a career in politics after the ceremony.
