HALOWEEN MEET 🎃

A former Learjet 60 pilot’s account of why he calls it the most dangerous airplane he has flown is spreading after a Learjet 60 crashed in a residential area near Greenacres in Palm Beach County, Florida, on November 1, k*lling all nine people aboard. The jet had left Austin, Texas, for North Eleuthera in the Bahamas. The pilot, who says he flew the type for about 15 years, wrote his thoughts in a message to a friend, who shared it on X.

He describes a super critical wing that stalls easily in turbulence, and a “coffin corner” at high altitude where losing about 20 knots can cause a stall while gaining 20 can cause overspeed or a Mach tuck. He says a hard push to recover can send the jet into the other limit, so the fix is tiny fingertip corrections. His advice to pilots he mentored was to never try to top a thunderstorm and to go around it, even if it adds half an hour. He also says ice is unlikely at those extreme cold temperatures, and that the jet has heated wings and tail.

The NTSB says the crew reported light, clear ice and moderate turbulence at 35,000 feet around 12:47 p.m. Eastern, followed by a reported mayday for overspeed. The FAA says the jet dropped from about 35,250 feet to 8,750 feet in just over a minute. NTSB member Tom Chapman said investigators have some evidence the aircraft broke up before impact, and dashcam video appears to show the horizontal stabilizer missing, though that is unconfirmed. No cause has been determined, and the pilot’s comments are his own opinion.

Thank you to everyone who came out to see me and @blackholly in our (dorky) matching outfits at @bnunionsqnyc! It was a fabulous launch event and I can’t believe TLKOF is out in the world! (In the second picture you can see my publicist Josh trying Kit’s terrible coffee drink. He said it wasn’t so bad!)
