In an exclusive interview with Baller Alert, the actor, who portrays Malcolm X in Prime Video’s new drama, explained why Ali’s work ethic should resonate with Gen Z. “Outside of Muhammad’s conviction, you know, I would say the work ethic,” Ealy said when asked what he wants young people to take from the series. He described the sacrifices he believes defined the boxer’s early years. “You’re talking about a man who sacrificed so much, didn’t smoke, didn’t drink, didn’t party, you know, didn’t have a girlfriend.” Ealy was pointing to the intensity of Ali’s commitment, particularly during an era when the young fighter was establishing himself in boxing while becoming a public figure whose influence reached well beyond sports. “Like he was just so focused on training and then being a voice for the nation,” he continued. For Michael Ealy, the message is especially relevant in a social media era when visibility can arrive long before someone has spent years mastering a craft. His comparison places the pursuit of lasting recognition alongside the instant attention available through online platforms. “And so, I hope that the younger generation, Gen Z, will look at that as an example of what it takes to become an icon rather than, you know, feel entitled to being an icon just because you have a platform with 12,000 followers.” The Greatest follows Ali before he became a worldwide symbol of athletic excellence and political conviction. Born Cassius Clay in Louisville, Kentucky, he won Olympic gold in Rome in 1960 and captured his first heavyweight championship by defeating Sonny Liston in 1964. Later that year, he became known as Muhammad Ali.

The hardest thing I’ve ever had to build wasn’t my body. It was the man behind it. One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned is that what you dedicate your life to can shape your identity, but it should never determine your worth. I still get excited walking into a gym. I still love learning, pushing myself, and finding new ways to grow. That passion hasn’t changed. And it doesn’t need an audience or recognition to exist. There’s a difference between loving what you do and needing what you do to prove who you are. I think a lot of men wrestle with that. We spend our lives building our bodies, careers, businesses, and reputations. But how much time do we spend building our character? What happens when life challenges everything you thought made you somebody? My faith has taught me that I’m more than what I accomplish. That who I am when nobody is watching matters more than what the world gets to see. Never lose your passion. Never stop pursuing excellence. Just don’t spend your entire life building something impressive while neglecting the man God has called you to become.
