Somewhere between the reef and the surface… we crossed paths with this little rocket. 🦑

Gliding through the blue like it owned the place — effortless, curious, and ridiculously photogenic.
Sometimes the best encounters are the ones you never planned.
Just squid things in the Red Sea. 💙

How do you know who you actually are? ‘Stay true to yourself.’ ‘Be authentic.’ ‘You do you.’ But how do you actually know who that ‘you’ is? Well, the ancient Greek philosopher Plotinus might give us a solution, because Plotinus is famous for giving us what’s called the ‘negative way,’ or the ‘via negativa.’ And this says that if you want to find or understand something, you should subtract all of the things that are not that thing. So, for example, if you want to decide what to wear for work, you should subtract all of the things that you don’t want to wear. And the thing that you have left, ideally, is the thing that you have to wear. So Plotinus asks us to imagine our authentic self as like a statue contained within a block of marble. And the art of finding that statue is about chipping away all of those things you don’t care about. Chip away the things you do for money or for praise, or because you have to. Chip away the chores, the jobs, and the responsibilities. What you are left with is your authentic being, and if you do more of that, you will thrive. In other words, you need to reduce. Cut out all of the impositions and pressures in life. Cut out all of the have-tos and must-dos. Cut out all of the things that you don’t actually want to do, because what you have left will be you.

Они жили в маленьком поселке на берегу залива. В поселке была одна единственная школа, где бабушка работала учительницей географии. У моей бабушки уже было двое маленьких детей, а ещё свекровь, которая жила в нескольких домах от них, и любила наведываться в гости — и рассказывать бабушке, как вести быт, жить жизнь и воспитывать детей. Бабушке в какой-то момент это осточертело. И вместо того, чтобы скандалить со свекровью, она сказала: это твоя мать, или ты с ней разберешься сам — или мы разведемся. Развестись. В маленьком поселке. В семидесятые. Бабушка рассказала мне эту историю в 2019 году. Я приехала к ней в гости одна. Родители предлагали поехать всем вместе, но я сказала: нет, это моё отдельное время. И приехала на автобусе. Несколько дней мы неловко говорили о неважных вещах, а потом стали говорить о важных. «Не выходи замуж, пока не узнаешь, кто ты, чего хочешь и не будешь хорошо чувствовать себя сама по себе» Я смотрела на бабушку, сидевшую напротив меня за застеленным клеенкой столом, и не верила своим ушам. Бабушки такое обычно не говорят, ведь так? «Но я, конечно, же так не сделала, вышла замуж за дедушку, пока еще училась в институте», — весело подмигнула бабушка. Моя бабушка была первой женщиной в семье, у которой было высшее образование. С 15 лет она жила одна, учившись сначала в педучилище в Краснодаре, а потом в институте в Ростове-на-Дону. Update From Florida: Pistol now has full access to the house. He doesn’t hang out in the cat room as much. He only eats & drinks from Cleo’s bowls. Pistol will chirp SO LOUD at night (I know it’s not loud in the video, that was just the first time I got him on camera)
