Abdul El-Sayed just made history in Michigan. The Democrat defeated Trump backed Republican Mike Rogers to win the state’s open U.S. Senate seat, and he will become the first Muslim American ever to serve in the Senate. El-Sayed, a physician born in Michigan to Egyptian immigrant parents, previously ran the health departments in Detroit and Wayne County. He won despite Rogers and his allies outspending him roughly 3 to 2, a late campaign of attacks on his Muslim faith, and Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens, whom he beat in the primary, endorsing Rogers just two days before the election. “Michigan, we did it,” El-Sayed told supporters in Detroit just before 2 a.m. He will take the seat held by retiring Democratic Sen. Gary Peters, adding to the Democrats’ new Senate majority.
Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens is facing backlash after endorsing Republican Mike Rogers over Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan's key Senate race just two days before Election Day. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries called the move a "terrible decision," while Reps. Delia Ramirez and Pramila Jayapal have called for Stevens to be pushed out of the party's House caucus.
