On March 25, 1978, at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, two heavyweight contenders met in a WBC title eliminator with everything on the line: Larry Holmes and the feared knockout artist Earnie Shavers.
Shavers entered the ring widely regarded as the hardest puncher in boxing history, but Holmes brought one of the greatest weapons the division had ever seen—his razor-sharp left jab. For 12 brilliant rounds, Holmes controlled distance, neutralised Shavers’ deadly right hand, and put on a boxing clinic to pitch a shutout Unanimous Decision win!
This dominant victory earned Holmes his shot at Ken Norton three months later, where he captured the WBC Heavyweight Championship and began one of the most dominant title reigns in history. 🥊
