There’s an easy way to make your garden feel bigger, and you don’t need any extra space.

Think in layers. Where you’ve got height, there’s space underneath to add another layer at ground level. It means you make great use of every bit of your garden, keep the weeds away and achieve a garden that looks full and lush into the bargain.

Think low growing grasses, ferns and in the cases of my pots, lavender.

The begonias, however, didn’t get the memo. They’ve now become the main attraction!

If your fatsia is growing in shade, ferns are probably your best bet, or maybe Japanese forest grass (hakonechloa). Love that!

What would you recommend under a fatsia. Have ferns to the left of it?

Effectivement un ptit jardin peut accueillir bien plus d'espèces qu'on ne pense ( y en a jamais trop ) et cela amène de la vie au jardin quand on choisi les bonnes plantes et les bonnes fleurs ...

What's a good thing to pair with cannas? I just established my garden so I have an east-west border section that's just cannas as part of my filing space I'm going to redo in the spring. I'm thinking I'll squeeze in some sabals for evergreen interest and moisture tolerance, and plant some caladiums at the base on the north edge. It's fairly narrow though which limits how much I can do.
