Waste doesn’t disappear when we throw it away. It simply leaves our sight.
Behind every bag, bottle, food wrapper and discarded material is a system — one that involves generation, segregation, collection, transportation, recovery, treatment and final disposal.
Through my learning experience at LAWMA Academy, I’ve gained a deeper appreciation for the work, systems and responsibilities involved in managing waste and keeping our communities healthier and cleaner.
It has also reinforced something I believe strongly:
Waste management is not only an environmental issue. It is a public-health issue, a community issue and a shared responsibility.
I’m interested in exploring these conversations more from everyday waste practices to resource recovery, sustainability and the role each of us can play.
Because perhaps the first step towards better waste management is simply learning to see waste differently.
