It sure has made a lot of brewery owners think they're a lot smarter than they are

Brewbound and VIP did a lil interview on it not long ago. Mostly to do with long term cost cutting imo

So my perspective is from a homebrewer, and I think it's two-sided. The first is that the homebrewers association just rolled out their AI assistant, which is basically a research parser for their entire media library. I think that's great, it's a great tool to help people find information. However on the other hand, some home Brewers have begun using genAI to completely make their entire recipe, and they just brew what the chatbot tells them to. In that regard, I feel it's removing the core creative parts of homebrewing, such as discovering malts you like and trying out mixing them, playing with hop aromas and yeasts, and the trial and error process where you either refine your brew or discover something new that you like. At that point why not just buy a beer instead

This isn’t a positive, but I see AI art popping up more often on packaging. There are some prominent brands who could easily be paying human designers and artists, but are choosing to tarnish their reputations with AI slop.

Still using database software from 2003 along with mostly everything else from that era so I don’t think it’s having much of a role in operations but I’m sure the top level management at bigger breweries are having a time using it for planning and such

It’s helped me know who to avoid buying from when it’s obvious they used AI for labels, branding, or decor

AI, I'm sure seems like an inexpensive solution, but it comes with long-term costs to the environment. As well, I've often thought, what is a small business saying about itself by using AI, especially when it comes at the cost of another small business - a local artist or graphic designer

AI, by it's very function as a singular-instance based generative system, really doesn't sound very useful for the purposes of brewing. Now, I have no experience in brewing, but as I understand it it is a long form process. Every previous choice must be taken into account when deciding the next. By it's own function, AI is not built for that, even in the more specialized agentic models. The human brain is built to make connections, so it makes sense that complex sequences over long amounts of time are ideal for expert humans. As for AI art generation for labels, that's also just a bad business decision. Anti-AI sentiment aside, branding is meant to be unique, identifiable, and containing a personality. If an up and coming brewery couldn't afford an artist, they would be so so so much better served by being the "brewery with the 'bad' labels" because some guy just threw something together in MS Paint. It's charming, it's unique, and it's honest and consumers crave honesty. No one craves the "median" option. They want the option they can personalize and identify with.

If I see art on a can/label that has the AI "shine" to it, Im not gonna buy it. If a brewery wasn't willing to pay an artist to design art for their beers, what else are they going to take a short cut with or under pay people for?

AI is a great tool to get started and visualize labels/marketing etc, but it has that filter of fakeness that cannot be shaken off. A lot of places now have blatantly AI labels, which makes it harder for me to support.

I genuinely don’t see how AI could improve on or help with something that humans have been doing for thousands of years. Of course technology has changed brewing through history in terms of things like scale and controlling variables, but it’s always been highly skilled humans doing the brewing. Why dehumanise something which is such a fundamental part of humanity? Also why waste water on AI that could be used to make beer? 🤷🍻
