Democrat Abdul El-Sayed will become the nation’s first Muslim senator, a historic victory that also gives his party’s ascendant progressive wing evidence that far-left candidates can win competitive elections even in presidential battlegrounds like Michigan.⁠

With 85% of the expected vote tabulated, El-Sayed had 52% and former Republican Rep. Mike Rogers had 46%, the Associated Press reported.⁠
