Color rules the reef.
TEEMING TENEMENT, the coral reef houses residents as brilliant as they are numerous. Foot-long green parrotfish, a male, nibbles algae with beaklike mouth; the female of Sparisoma viride wears black, white, and red. Fooled by her different garb, marine biologists once thought the lady a separate species. Silvery hitchhike a remora with a spiny suction disk atop its head, clings to her.
In a Fisheye-lens cieu, Jo Starc releases rotenone amid graceful sea fans. The paralyzing poison, harmless to divers, helps her take specimens of Alligator Reef’s 390 fish species.
Turn the foldout for a look at the coral-reef community from ocean slope to shore-side shallow’s.
