My dear friend, artist and filmmaker David Lewis, described to me some time ago his profound connection to a page of handwritten text given to him by Derek Jarman. He had lived with this framed text for more than 30 years, looking at it whilst he was working and observing the light as it moved across its surface.

As he said: “Derek’s single page of hand-written text so eloquently encapsulates his profound relationship with his garden – as a place of healing, rest and reflection. It brings us back to what truly matters.”

Through our conversations the idea of him sharing this as a hand-crafted print emerged. I had made prints with Stephen @55_prints before and knew that he and David would combine their expertise to make something beautiful.

'After the garden' is a new limited edition screenprint by David Lewis that invites us into Derek Jarman’s creative process, capturing not a finished text or completed artwork, but the hesitations, revisions and reflections that are as integral to creativity as to the making of a garden. The original marks are presented against a background colour selected to echo the paper on which Derek made his notes.

The garden at Prospect Cottage is now revered around the world, but what was important to Derek was the act of gardening itself and being in his garden, celebrated here with this print.

'After the garden' features in ‘Some prints’, an exhibition also including works by Robert Rauschenberg, Tom Hammick and Ed Ruscha, opening at @project78gallery in St. Leonards-on-sea from Saturday 24th October until Friday 20th November.

Only the first 20 prints in the edition will be available from the gallery.

Lovely, I have some handwritten letters from Derek myself, which I absolutely treasure for their beauty!
