Can Geometry Make a Character Feel Like Part of a Larger Story?
For illustrator Jibin Joy (@madevitjoy), the answer lies in giving every shape a purpose.
His series “Beauty Behind Geometry” features four original characters - Helen, Alex, Hon Joe, and Henry. Each grew from a different story or experience, from a childhood friend who became a sailor to Jibin’s own connection with nature.
Rather than defining characters only through appearance, Jibin focuses on the stories they carry. Geometry naturally pushes him to simplify, asking what the essence of each character really is. Eyes, plants, birds, silhouettes, objects and other details remain only when they contribute meaning.
His compositions are built like puzzles, with each new element creating another connection or layer. Visual beauty is not the starting point; purpose and meaning come first.
What makes the process especially rewarding for Jibin is when viewers discover hidden details, form their own interpretations, and return to the work with a different story.
