A full house at Aberfan Community Centre today for the premiere of Aberfan - From Darkness to Light, with the BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales, Ynysowen Male Voice Choir, the children of Ysgol Rhyd y Grug and Ysgol Ynysowen and Narrator Mark Lewis-Jones.
Most of the audience and many of the performers had direct experience of the dreadful disaster in 1966 which claimed the lives of 116 children and 28 adults.
Such a privilege for composer Paul Mealor and I to be in the company of amazing people like Mair Jones, now in her 90s, the last surviving teacher from Pantglas School, and Jeff Edwards, the last child brought out alive and now the lynchpin of the 60th commemorations.
After this chamber performance, we are now looking forward to tomorrow’s full version in Hoddinott Hall in Cardiff. It will be live streamed on the BBC National Orchestra of Wales website.
