Redbird Engineers Taking Their Research Across Illinois!!!

Our Illinois State University engineering students showcased THREE exciting research projects at this week’s Illinois Innovation Network (IIN) Conference at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville!

From sustainability to emergency medical response and biomechanics, our students are putting engineering into ACTION! 💡

♻️ Isaiah Kerr presented research focused on transforming non-hazardous healthcare plastic waste into useful products instead of sending it to landfills. This Connected Communities Initiative project with OSF HealthCare is led by Dr. Md Hafizur Rahman in collaboration with Dr. Craig McLauchlan and Dr. Umar Iqbal.

🚑 Ryan Whitener, Jake Smith, and Gavin Visser presented their Medical Emergency Response Transport Team (MERTT) prototype, designed to help deliver emergency medical care in areas traditional ambulances can’t reach! What started as an EGR 130 class project with guidance from OSF HealthCare and mentorship from Dr. Iqbal and Dr. Rahman has continued well beyond the classroom!

🧬 Cayla Weygand presented her research on soft tissue biomechanics alongside faculty mentor Dr. Mahmudul Hasan.

👏 A HUGE shoutout to our ASME Student Chapter, including Chapter President Maggie Brown, for organizing and supporting the trip!

These are the experiences that make Redbird Engineering special! Our students aren’t waiting until graduation to tackle real-world challenges. They’re researching, designing, innovating, and making connections TODAY!

Congratulations to our student researchers and faculty mentors! We’re proud of the work you’re doing and the opportunities you’re creating!!!
