PRISM MICRO MIX #004 🔥
Some tunes I've been having fun with. Although judging by my expression, fun is serious business.
Learning to DJ has got me thinking about the psychology of maximising — the tendency to search for the best possible option rather than settle for something good enough. (If you've ever found a perfectly lovely little black dress but still felt compelled to visit every shop on Oxford Street, just in case there was a better one, you might be a maximiser too!)
Historically, I've been very much a maximiser. And DJing, it turns out, offers almost limitless opportunities for this particular form of self-torture.
As a video editor, I can't tell you how many hours, days, months — probably an entire year of my life — I've spent agonising over edits that were already great. Another tweak here, another tweak there, when hours earlier I could have had a happy client, a paid invoice and my life back!
And now I've found myself in another activity with an infinite number of possible combinations, and the endless question of what is 'best'.
Perhaps the pursuit of the 'best' isn't really about the thing itself, but the feeling we hope it will give us. Satisfaction, certainty, relief. The sense that we've finally got it right and can stop looking.
I'm not interested in abandoning standards, but I am becoming more interested in recognising when the pursuit of something better starts to take more than it gives.
Still learning. Still overthinking.
