Would you jump 24 meters into a river for a crowd of strangers?
In Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, diving from the iconic Stari Most (Old Bridge) is a tradition that stretches back centuries.
Today, local divers gather on the bridge, collecting contributions from spectators. Once enough money has been raised, a diver takes the plunge into the cold Neretva River below.
But this is more than a tourist spectacle. It’s a tradition rooted in courage, local pride, and generations of history.
When I visited, no one actually jumped. I watched the divers practicing, waiting for the collection pot to fill, with the beautiful old city as a backdrop.
Sometimes the anticipation is just as fascinating as the moment itself.
