NOW U KNOW? #BE_4U #BF_NOWUKNOW #BEFIRST
In 1865, an 18-year-old man placed an ad in a newspaper, reportedly in Maine, under the headline “Chance for a Spinster.” In it, he proudly listed everything he thought made him a good catch: a good set of teeth, support for President Andrew Johnson, the flag and the Fourth of July, and a farm with 18 cleared acres, a house, a barn, nine sheep, a bull and two heifers. He also bragged that his buckwheat looked “first rate” and that his oats and potatoes were “bully,” 19th-century slang for excellent. He promised to provide bread, butter, hoop skirts and “waterfalls,” a fashionable women’s hairpiece of the time, for his future wife for the rest of her life. “I want to get married,” he wrote. “But I don’t know how to do it.” The ad resurfaced in 2017 when Oxford researcher Max Roser shared it online, and it quickly went viral. Nobody knows if he ever found a wife.
