I see this regularly in my showroom.
A customer comes in to rent an outfit, shows me his wedding invitation and asks:
“Black Tie Optional. So… should I wear a suit or a tuxedo?”
He knows he can wear either. What he wants is confidence that he’ll feel appropriately dressed.
A suit and a tuxedo create distinctly different looks. Allowing both doesn’t resolve his question.
That is why I wouldn’t put “Black Tie Optional” on your wedding invitation.
Want tuxedos? Write “Black Tie.”
Want suits? Write “Elegant Attire — Suit and Tie.”
Give your guests a clear direction.
