"Veto." As the Democrats gain control of both the House of Representatives and Senate, Republican President Donald Trump has said he will veto any "insane" legislation they send to his desk. So, how powerful is the president's veto, and how does it work? Congress is responsible for passing federal bills and laws, which are then sent to the president for approval. But the president can veto legislation passed by both the House and Senate, sending the bill back to Congress with their objections. However, a presidential veto can be overridden if two-thirds of both the House and Senate vote to pass the legislation despite the president's objections. The president can also use a 'pocket veto'. If Congress adjourns during the president's 10-day review period and the president takes no action, the bill does not become law and Congress cannot override the veto.
