@arcinaori understood the assignment
it feels so surreal to be typing this, but after three years of work and pain, patience and impatience, perfectionism, self-sabotage, disappointment, and a lot of unimaginable luck, “you made me / skin in linen” is finally out. thank you to everyone who has helped us along the way, especially Colin Stewart and Max Frazer, who helped us record and mix these songs almost two years ago. i am never not grateful for the opportunity to communicate with people in this very bizarre way, and i try to hold it at the same time as i hold my own suffering — performing the set is always painful and it’s so fucked to see photos and videos of myself in what has become a ritualistic cathartic performance of a dark part of my story; to try and compartmentalize inevitable criticism of the album as art from my very real experience of having my story criticized, invalidated, or ignored by my community; to resist the objectification of being a performer existing on the internet; to refuse to let this become another victim narrative. this is my dream. i didn’t expect it to be so terrifying and painful but still i choose to be here. i’m lucky to be here. at every show, i meet incredible, inspiring, and kind people. ty, gav, and gary do so much to support and care for me as i juggle it all. it’s crazy, because the project called PISS seems to me at once so tiny and so massive, entirely insignificant and important, the easiest and most impossible thing i’ve ever tried to do. as i write this, i am fighting the urge to say something self-deprecating and disparaging about the work, to shield myself instead of being vulnerable, but the truth is that PISS is the culmination of a lifetime of experiences i never thought id be able to transmute into something generative or beautiful. i’m very grateful for all the people i’ve been blessed to meet, whose tenderness gives me the courage to overcome my fears and share my work. it is still hard for me to believe that such tenderness can exist between strangers. so thank you. i am moved by the ways we make space for each other. and there will always be space for you here. and you, and you, *animated embroidery by gavin’s little sis, billy moya
