Forever in awe of how gold leaf changes depending on the lighting and what’s in front of it.
This is a portrait of Lucy Liu & Lucy Liu 2 (that we lowkey problematically named them after the only asian celebrity we knew growing up). My childhood dolls my mom gifted me for my first birthday. She had read that it was important for children of color to see themselves represented in their surrounding and went out of her way to order this doll from the US In the early 2000s. I didn’t understand it then, but looking back, I see it as one of the ways she tried to protect me from the alienation she had experienced growing up a Korean adoptee in Sweden. This painting is about that quiet, generational act of care and also a symbol for the complex relationship I myself have had to my Asian identity throughout my life.
Limited edition (15 only!) prints available in my bio <3 and exhibtion Hal-Muh-Ni is open in Malmös Folkets Park this weekend xx
