President Donald Trump agreed Wednesday with Vice President JD Vance that the Iran war contributed to Republicans’ midterm losses, but said he would make the same decision again. “I think it’s largely true,” Trump said, pointing to a short-term rise in gasoline prices. He defended the war as necessary to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. Earlier Wednesday, Vance wrote on X, “The reason we lost is the war,” after Democrats won control of the House and Senate. Vance said many voters who backed the Trump-Vance ticket in 2024 showed up but voted for Democrats. Citing an unnamed pollster, he said those voters wanted the war ended, action on living costs and inflation, an “America First” focus and changes to the U.S. relationship with Israel. Vance’s post came before Trump’s Wednesday remarks, though Trump had also acknowledged Tuesday night that Iran contributed to the losses while defending his decision to launch the war.
