Gillian Anderson has addressed a viral video where she instructed a fan not to sit in the front row of her play every night.

So what does this interaction, and the growing trend of celebrities calling out audience members, tell us about the current state of theatre etiquette?

Better question: who has the money for 20 nights of front row theatre??

This is what happens when Patti retires from the stage, the audience looses its fear

I think its just etiquette in general thats getting worse. Concerts and theaters are big ones, but even like bar etiquette or grocery shopping etiquette is falling by the wayside.

Imagine seeing the same faces. Every night. In the front row. 1. It defeats the purpose of theatre and playing to a new crowd 2. That's scary and awkward as hell dude ugh

I think generally it’s a fine line, because theater, opera etc were elitist and gatekept for too long. So I do think it needed to become more casual. But within reason. I do think it’s possible to sit in the front row 20 times without distracting the actors or making a bad impression. So there’s clearly a history there and one, Gillian Anderson doesn’t want to disclose. So part of being a good audience in this case would be to let it go. Even filming this and putting it on the Internet is overstepping in my books. I honestly think pics and videos from Stage door shouldn’t be posted at all. It’s essentially an actors private time, not a photoshoot or autograph session, so take that moment and cherish it for yourself.

Poor Gillian, she wasn’t even rude. She’s just telling these people she’s seen multiple times in multiples places - including a number of times over and over in the front row of a very intimidate play - that it was distracting. It is, maybe catching sometimes eye over and over. It’s blown out to proportion by media and social media. It’s not that deep.

This is basically stalking, people need to cool it off. You don't have to see the same performer 20 times, everything more than 5 is strange behaviour and borderline obsession 💀

I think most people agree with her.? Anyone who’s been to SohoPlace will know that the front row is practically on the stage. I’ve sat in it and you could lean forward and touch the actors during the performance. In fact, it can feel a little strange, I saw Lucas hedges and Mike Faist in Brokeback Mountain there, and they were really only a few inches away from me in some quite intimate scenes. I was distracted by how close they were. It’s not like a regular theatre where the stage is above you. So the actors are very close to you, and if it’s the same people sitting there every night that must really be weird.

Im a performer for a living and I don’t like to perform to anyone I know. It’s stupid, I get it. But they make me nervous! We all have our own reasons, I’m sure hers is valid.
