Luis Garcia spent four days photographing the villages around Guatemala's Lake Atitlán for "The Renaissance Tour," a Virtuoso feature on Maya culture and everyday life. The assignment marked his 14th year with the magazine, a partnership that began in 2012 in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Instead of a shot list, his photo editor sent draft story text naming the people and places to cover.
Luis drove a rental car between lakeside towns to cover more ground. He made one exception: a 25-minute lancha ride from San Pedro La Laguna to Santiago Atitlán, where he photographed a street market. San Juan La Laguna, quieter and less touristed, left the strongest impression.
His portrait of Delfina Par, founder of the textile shop Casa Flor Ixcaco, opened the feature. Visitors had copied the shop's patterns without permission, so Luis skipped close-ups of the fabrics. He photographed the naturally dyed yarns instead.
Luis edited his selects every night. By the day before his flight home, the magazine had finalized its picks.
