Placing the shadow world of the stuntwoman in the spotlight; paying homage to a body that is unique, and at the same time interchangeable. She leaps out of the plane. She crashes the car. She breaks her bones. And as soon as the camera stops shooting, her name is erased.
In Stuntwoman, Ika Schwander and Lizzy Deacon dive headlong into the shadow world of the stuntwoman: the body that embodies danger, while having to remain invisible. The doppelganger who breaks the fall, but never reaps the applause. The body that has to achieve the impossible, before being wiped from the story.
Stunts demanding extreme precision are interspersed with moments of vulnerability in a collaboration between Ika and monozygotic twin sister acrobats Clementine and Grace Tonkin Wells (holders of the Guinness World Record for the longest foot-to-foot trapeze hold).
What motivates a woman to seek out such risks? Who gets to embody danger, and who ends up in the spotlight? What do we lose when the body that actually falls is switched for the body that accepts the bouquet? When does authenticity get replaced by simulation?
