EDO CORPS MEMBERS SENSITIZED ON HIV PREVENTION AND STIGMA REDUCTION

As part of the ongoing health enlightenment lectures in camp, 2026 Batch C Stream 1 Corps members in Edo State have been educated on HIV prevention and stigma reduction.

The resource person, Dr. Ekedozie Steve, explained that Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) weakens the body’s immune system, making infected persons more susceptible to infections. He identified contact with infected blood and unprotected sexual intercourse as major routes of HIV transmission.
He urged Corps members to understand the risks associated with HIV and take appropriate preventive measures.
Also speaking, Dr. Francis, a Corps member, advised Corps members to abstain from sexual intercourse as a means of preventing HIV infection. He added that those who engage in sexual activity should use protective measures, such as condoms, correctly and consistently.
Dr. Francis noted that Nigeria is collaborating with the World Health Organisation (WHO) in efforts to address HIV-related challenges and promote public awareness.
He also highlighted the 2013 film Stigma, produced by the Rivers State Ministry of Health in collaboration with movie producers, as an awareness initiative aimed at correcting misconceptions about HIV. He explained that the film demonstrates that sexual intercourse is not the only means through which the virus can be transmitted.
The lecture further emphasised the importance of accurate information and public awareness in preventing HIV transmission and reducing stigma against people living with the virus.
