New faculty research! ๐
Dr. Siddhartha Sen (Professor of City and Regional Planning and Associate Dean of the School of Architecture and Planning) recently co-authored From Frozen Urbanism to a Civic Future: Development stakeholder perspectives on Kolkata Metropolitan Area's Jute Mills with Neha Doshi, Anushka Shahdadpuri, and Dr. Brent D. Ryan of MIT.
Published in Planning Perspectives, the study examines the transformation of jute mill sites in the Kolkata Metropolitan Area of West Bengal, India. Drawing on interviews with mill owners, planners, architects, and civil society representatives, the researchers explore how political, regulatory, and market forces have shaped redevelopment following decades of industrial decline. Their findings highlight important tensions between private redevelopment, industrial heritage, affordable housing, and the needs of former workers and surrounding communities. The researchers argue that creating a more inclusive post-industrial future will require stronger regulation, greater community participation, and sustained investment in public infrastructure.
The research was supported by MIT and offers a valuable contribution to ongoing conversations about post-industrial redevelopment and planning in the Global South. Dr. Senโs jute mills collaboration is one of several involving MIT and Morgan State City Planning faculty and students. We will share more soon!
