I put this on to listen properly and about four songs in I forgot that was the point.

Chapter fourteen of the ruverb listening sessions. “Delightfully” — Monika Ryan, with Keith Loftis, Steve Einerson, Neal Miner and Joe Strasser.

Fourteen songs, all of them hers, not a standard in sight, and the whole thing just moves.

Her singing is the reason to be here. It’s natural in a way that’s hard to describe and immediately obvious when you hear it — nothing performed, nothing pushed, every word articulated and every phrase shaped like she means it rather than like she’s executing it. She’s dynamic too, which is rarer than it should be. Singers who can actually get quiet are a small club. I could listen to this voice for a very long time and I think I’m going to.

The band around her plays like people who enjoy each other. Piano, sax and bass all clear as anything, nothing smeared or buried. And whoever mixed and mastered this trusted the playing enough to leave it alone — it stays open and it stays dynamic, which takes some discipline.

“The Luckiest In The World” with Loftis and Einerson is the one I keep putting back on.

Jazz isn’t where I live and I wasn’t expecting to love this as much as I do. Nothing I’d change about it. I just had a really good time.
