For all of you keyboard horse warriors that have never started somewhere…

The FIRST part of this video is the first time I have ever trotted and ridden in an English saddle. I am well aware that it is terrible. My back is too straight, my arms are flying everywhere and my form is… well, not correct.

Shocker… I know. We ALL have to start somewhere.

The second part is actually MUCH improved, but I still have so much to work on.

Trotting… it is hard. Like REALLY hard. Especially trying to understand the rhythm on a horse that is learning himself at the same time.

Up, down.
Up, down.
Breathe.
Keep squeezing.
Heels down.
Look up.
Post.
Wait… what is diagonal??

When your brain doesn’t know how to keep up with everything at once, it’s hard.

But man, I have really enjoyed figuring it out.

The first video is literally my first time ever riding in an English saddle. NO, it isn’t pretty. YES, I look like a flopping sack of potatoes. But it’s something I honestly never thought I would enjoy, and now I actually plan on showing Dublin in English at some point.

We just have to learn how to post correctly first. 😂

So stay tuned to see how long it takes this 40-year-old to learn how to properly post in a trot.

And for anyone else learning something new… don’t let being bad at it in the beginning stop you. We all have to start somewhere.

You should try to shorten your stirrups and balance on your heels when you put your heels down and try to have to have lizzy lunge him while you get the feel for it so your not in his mouth

Could you do some lunge lessons first to develop balance and an independent seat as it looks like you're balancing on the reins (ouch poor horse's mouth). This is how we learnt as kids...also these days you can have lessons on mechanical horses (a digital horse simulator) which are good for perfecting leg aids and position...I'm sure if you google, you'll find one nearish you.

Honestly you should shorten your stirrups a touch, it looks like you’re really fighting to keep your feet in them and that’s messing up your seat and making it harder for you to post. Something a lot of people overlook when they start is how the tack fits not just the horse but you lol after about 5-6 months of riding I learned I have a very specific length I like my stirrups at, so don’t be shy to ask if you can shorten them! Your trainer can show you how to do it :)

It’s awesome that you’re learning something new, congrats on your improvement! You can only go up from here, especially if you’ve got a good trainer by your side to show you the ropes!
