Congratulations to Dylan Hoefling (@dylnhoef) on winning the $1,000 James Northcutt Scholarship for their Greene and Greene architects inspired birdhouse! Dylan is one of two winners for the Summer 2026 quarter, and this award is given by #UCLAxARCID in consultation with Eleanor Schrader for excellence in the Fundamentals of Interior Architecture course. Be sure to swipe right to see more of the gorgeous details of this winning birdhouse!
Congrats again, Dylan! 🎉🎉🎉

I was inspired by the architects Greene and Greene from the Arts and Crafts Movement and recreated various designs from the stained-glass lighting fixtures and windows found in their homes. Each side of the birdhouse shows a different Greene and Greene design, inspired by organic forms found in nature along with traditional Japanese woodworking and art. I also made sure to include a few examples of their iconic Cloud-Lift motif, including the front entrance and the detail at the very top, because this simply wouldn’t be a proper homage to the Greene brothers without the Cloud-Lift.
I embellished an already made birdhouse I found at the hardware store with a wood burning pen and sanding tool and then added color using acrylic paints and a wood stain.
