Good idea or the perfect way to unwind?
🔁⛪ Georg Friedrich Händel and Johan Halvorsen – Passacaglia, on the Suite in G minor, HWV 432 Monk Avel – piano 🎹 • The morning after the premiere, the newspaper Bergens Aftenblad wrote that the very short theme was brilliantly varied, and Halvorsen and Johannessen played the piece again months later. That summer, Halvorsen took it to the composer Edvard Grieg, probably to find out what Grieg thought, according to the Henle edition. The following year, he sold the passacaglia to Wilhelm Hansen of Copenhagen, a publisher then enjoying a big sales hit with another work by Halvorsen, the Entry March of the Boyars. The dedication went to Adolf Brodsky, the Russian violinist who had been Halvorsen's teacher and had gotten Halvorsen a free place at the Leipzig conservatory. • Listen again for the notes near the end, when the camera moves from the full stage to the pianist in profile for the last time: they go on at the same pace as before, only much softer, like a conversation that continues in a low voice. • According to his own website, Monk Avel studied piano in Saint Petersburg, at the Rimsky-Korsakov music school and the city's conservatory, and then went to Mount Athos in Greece, where he spent seven years at the Dochiariou monastery; back in Russia, he lived at the Valaam monastery. The Bulgarian agency BTA reports the same sequence and says his repertoire runs from Bach to Piazzolla. According to the video description, this recording is from a concert at Lakhta Hall in Saint Petersburg on 26 January 2025, and he plays in a purple cap and cassock on a dark stage. The passacaglia was the encore of that concert, the extra number played at the end of a recital. • 👉 Follow for the best of classical music daily on your feed. • #passacaglia #halvorsen #handel #classicalmusic
