FIELD NOTE: Has loud won? What happens when volume matters more than the mix?

When mixing FOH, the pressure to push the volume comes from every direction.

A crowd screaming every word.
An artist who wants energy.
Management who want it to feel huge.

And as the show goes on, your ears tire, detail starts to disappear, and another couple of dB feels like the answer.

But anyone can make it loud.

Delivering the energy and impact everyone is asking for, without leaning on volume to get there, is where experience and skill come in.

And there's a cost for being loud.

For the audience, it's one night. For the FOH engineer, it might be five nights a week.

Has the pressure for volume started to get in the way of what really engages an audience?
