8 days agoPaul Bley said in an interview that this album became so popular that the label tried to set up a tour. He vetoed it; not wanting fame or fortune. He complained that he had become a corporate rock star and rejected everything about that lifestyle. He was content playing for mostly empty rooms. I’ve known jazz musicians like that; they loathed popularity. They just wanted to play good music with good musicians and gigging was the only way to make that happen, but had an aggressive aversion to doing anything that could be called “popular”. I still love this album, and he still wound up becoming famous; if only by word of mouth.

25 days agoI heard from a very reliable source that Bley told the rest of the band it was only a rehearsal.
25 days agoOnly album that Jaco was on that left me “meh”. Don’t care for cool jazz which is what I’d say this is.
