In May, I got back on a horse for the first time in more than 10 years. I was definitely nervous and out of practice, but with the help of some truly incredible people who gave their time, patience and knowledge to help me find my confidence again and, the most amazing horse to look after me I was able to work towards something I never imagined I would be doing just a few months later.

Being given the opportunity to carry a flag into the arena as part of the Mount Isa Rodeo Opening Ceremony was so incredibly special. Riding into that arena, surrounded by the atmosphere of the Rodeo and representing something that means so much to our community, is a feeling I don’t think I’ll ever be able to properly put into words. It is a memory I will hold onto forever.

But perhaps one of the most unexpected parts of the experience was discovering a love for horses and riding that I had forgotten was there. Getting back in the saddle reminded me just how much I had missed it, and I’m so grateful to every person who encouraged me, taught me, trusted me and helped me get to that moment.

Now I’m just working on convincing my husband that our family has room for one more… of the equine variety. 🤎
