Democrat Amy Acton defeated Republican Vivek Ramaswamy for Ohio governor, according to the Associated Press, becoming the first Democrat to win the office since 2006 after a tight race that turned ugly in its final stretch. With 85% of the vote reported, Acton had 50.7% to 46% for Ramaswamy. Acton’s victory capped a race featuring two lead candidates who had never served in elected office. Acton, the former director of Ohio’s Department of Health under Republican Gov. Mike DeWine, graduated from medical school after growing up in Youngstown, Ohio. In her campaign Acton shared details of a tough childhood that forced her to endure periods of hunger, sexual abuse and homelessness. Climbing up from those lows made her “dedicated to lifting others,” she said. Ramaswamy previously ran for president before dropping out and endorsing President Trump in January 2024. At the start of Trump’s second term, Ramaswamy was appointed alongside Elon Musk to lead the Department of Government Efficiency, DOGE, with the aim of slashing government spending, but he left the venture after tension with Musk. Read more at the link in our bio. Photo: Sue Ogrocki/AP
