SOME things are worth taking a little detour for on tour...
Last week, whilst enjoying our North Cornwall experience, we spent a few precious minutes inside the beautiful church of St Mawgan-in-Pydar, near Newquay, admiring its remarkable medieval font.
Our North Tour mostly focuses on helluva dramatic and rugged coastal scenery... but we always like to go off the beaten path a little venture in land just a small way to show our guest guests some remarkable local history.
At first glance, it’s an impressive piece of craftsmanship. Look a little closer, though, and the details begin to reveal themselves.
Carved decoration, intricate faces and heraldic shields, alongside the fascinating use of different stones. Pentewan stone, marble, granite and other local building stones all tell their own story of Cornwall’s extraordinary geological and architectural heritage.
Just imagine the generations who have gathered around this font over the centuries. Children baptised, families brought together, and countless lives woven into the history of a Cornish community.
And there we were, taking just a few minutes out of a busy touring day to appreciate it.
That’s one of the pleasures of our North Cornwall Tour. We don’t simply rush from one famous landmark to another. Sometimes, the most fascinating discoveries are tucked away inside a village church, waiting patiently for someone to take a closer look.
Cornwall’s history isn’t always shouting at you. Sometimes, you simply need to stop and look.
Such a peaceful place as well...
Onward with the Majestic cliffs!
