Growing up in a Chicago suburb, @reemashihadeh did what many third-culture children do as they traverse from one ethnic nucleus to another: conform. At school, she’d ask her sister to slick her curly hair back into a sleek, straight bun in an attempt to hide her texture. She understood, even as a kid, that she looked different than her peers.
