A wedding invitation can get expensive real quick. Somebody sends you a beautiful invitation, and before you even RSVP, you’re already trying to figure out how much this friendship is about to cost. Because it’s never just showing up. There’s travel, hotel rooms, clothes, a wedding gift, food, and possibly taking time off work. By the time everything is added up, somebody else’s big day can easily turn into a $1,000 weekend. And that’s where people start feeling bad. Nobody wants to miss a friend’s wedding, especially someone they’ve known for years. But there’s a difference between not wanting to celebrate somebody and genuinely not being able to afford it. What’s crazy is how some people will take it personally. As if declining an invitation automatically means the friendship doesn’t matter. Meanwhile, that person might be trying to keep their bills paid and groceries in the house. A thoughtful gift, a nice message, or even a phone call should still mean something. Not everybody has the same financial situation, and nobody should have to put themselves in a hole just to prove they care. A wedding invitation is an invitation, not a financial obligation. And a real friendship should be able to survive an RSVP that says no.
What do you think of the Collins English Dictionary's pick for 2026? The major UK dictionary publisher has chosen the slang word “mogging”, meaning outshining or outperforming someone or something, most often in looks. Mostly used by Gen Z and Gen Alpha, the word went mainstream this year, with a 210% increase in its usage both online and in every day conversation. Shortlisted words included, ghost job, when an employer posts a position with no intention of appointing someone and p(doom), the estimation of probability of an AI-aided collapse of civilisation.
