“Report from Nisyros: Microhistories of a Thermal Bath Building in the Aegean Sea” written by @lydiaxynogala was published in Future Anterior (2023 issue) the peer-reviewed scholarly journal dedicated to the history, theory, and criticism of historic preservation edited by Jorge Otero Pailos, published by
University of Minnesota Press in partnership with Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation @columbiagsapp
At the time of publication, the baths were still functioning yet with an impeding renovation that could alter their historic character for good. Fast forward to today, the building, which has been in operation since the beginning of the 20th century has been shut for the past two bathing seasons. Numerous attempts in the form of meetings and in workshops (with ETH Zurich @philipursprungchair )to advocate the importance of the building and detrimental effects of its closure directly to the mayor of Nisyros have not been heard.
Invited by Gnomagoras @gnomagoras.nisyros the Nisyrian newspaper, I translated the article in Greek and It has now been published as a three-part article last spring/summer. At the end of the article- there’s a new addition, an urgent call for maintenance of the building which is in great danger of deteriorating further. If interested to read PM and will send the PDFs.
The article features commissioned photography by @tobias_wootton before the building closed down, taken in 2021.
