It's been a while since I profiled a marker upstate, so I picked this to commemorate Indigenous People's Day. On Route 9 in Poughkeepsie, approaching Sharon Drive this plaque remembers the origins of the region.
Uppuqui-ipis-ing is a Wappinger term. Uppuqui meaning "reed covered lodge", Ippis meaning "Little water or spring" and Ing meaning "place".
The Wappingers were an Eastern Algonquian tribe. They spoke Munsee, a now endangered language and 1 of only 2 Lenape (Delaware) languages. The Wappingers inhabited the eastern shore of the Hudson River, from the Bronx and northern Manhattan all the way up through Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess counties to Rhinebeck and Poughkeepsie.
