Halloween dates back more than 2,000 years to ancient Celtic traditions, particularly the festival of Samhain, when people believed the boundary between the living and the dead became thinner. Irish immigrants helped popularize pumpkin carving in America because pumpkins were larger and easier to carve.
Trick-or-treating developed from older European customs, including people visiting homes in costumes or requesting food in exchange for prayers or performances. Halloween has since become a major commercial celebration, especially in the United States. Another surprising fact is that black and orange became traditional Halloween colors because black symbolizes darkness and orange is associated with autumn harvests.
