Listening to Thimble, I am struck by how their music emulates the themes and images conveyed in their lyrics. Thimble's debut EP is titled ‘That’s a Long Time to Be Caught in the Undertow’ and it could well be crafted out of the undertow it speaks of : ‘Time’s like a river’ - ‘Look to the Tide.’

The group don’t build or crescendo; they don’t solo or play in unison, these are the wrong terms. Rather, they swirl and ripple and curve, as melody like waves tumble over the steady rock bed of rhythm carved out in each song, as flutes and violins peek out of nooks and crannies like fish emerging from under rocks. And, like a current, speed and time and intensity in Thimble are not dictated by numbers, but by nature.

Reasonable comparisons include with the likes of Pentangle, as well as folk’s modern, punkier baton-holders The New Eves. At times, Thimble dive into soundtrack-like sections that wouldn’t feel out of place in John Cameron’s score for Kes, or Magnet’s soundtrack to The Wicker Man. And throughout it all, there are sections which, to my ear, resemble the likes of Alfa Mist or even Julia Holter. This is all to say that within Thimble is wide and wonderful breadth. And so returns the comparison to nature: the group don’t operate in the realm of the singular. Rather, each of their songs contains multitudes. No one mood or section drives another; instead they co-exist, as if in an ecosystem of musical goodness.

Great description of the wonders of Thimble- I get Nick Drake vibes at times, with some subtle hints of slightly progish notes, à la Black Country New Road, at moments!
