Happy Birthday Ani! 12! 🎂

I'm on my way home from the East Coast so, in a totally awesome Dad move, I had to call her from a P.F. Chang's by Gate A41 in Salt Lake City. Memory making is important, even if it's just for future therapy.

We've called her Funny for as long as I can remember. At first because it rhymed with her name. More and more because it's who she is.

Ani is hilarious. The astute will note her sense of humor is remarkably similar to another family member's. I don't want to embarrass anyone by naming names, so let's just say he's tall and he's her Dad.

Watching your kid grow into a partial carbon copy of yourself is weird; and then challenging when she weaponizes your humor against you. Bro, get your own Netflix special.

Thankfully, Ani's redemption arc is that she's wonderfully thoughtful and kind, and cares deeply about the people around her. She's also fiercely independent. I don't think I've met anyone more dedicated to taking-care-of-business when it really counts.

Happy 12th birthday, Ani.

Thank you for letting me head east to see your sister, even though it meant missing your birthday. I cried a lot leaving Te Maia. Partly from the sadness of saying goodbye, but also from the sheer joy and wonder of having these extraordinary people in my life.

And you, Funny, are one of them.

I love you so much. I love being your Dad. In fact, I love you so much I could be your Uber Dad.

Which is a pun. Because I drive you everywhere.
