I wish I’d had the chance to meet my great-grandfather, Matias. He was a potter from Quiché, Guatemala, who made clay vessels, pots, and nativity figures. I would have loved to see him at work and learn from him.
His skills and techniques were never passed down through our family. That’s stayed with me, knowing how easily a craft can disappear from one generation to the next.
When I designed this piece, I named him Matias in his honour.
What began as a prototype in Canada became a handcrafted clay piece through my collaboration with artisans in Guatemala. 🇬🇹
In the Journey Collection, Matias represents the past and the wisdom of those who came before us.
