Miguel Arias walks the once-grand staircase leading to the second floor of the old Berkeley’s Department Store.

The Fresno city council member is showing off what he hopes will be a catalyst for the revitalization of this corner of Fulton Street, just off Chukchansi Park’s outfield entrance. He’s also making a point about the cost of abandoned buildings downtown.

In its heyday, this one was an anchor on a corner of a newly minted Fulton Mall that also included Gottschalks department store and Luftenburg’s (before the dress shop added bridal to its name). But the northward migration of Fresno’s commerce after the 1960s left the building vacant and neglected for the better part of four decades. The city bought the building in 2007 for $4.5 million, but struggled to fit it into revitalization plans.

In 2024, the city sold the building to the Fresno Area Hispanic Foundation. The foundation has now secured funding to start the project, Arias says.

Read more about plans for the building and see the history hidden away inside it at link in bio or FresnoBee.com.

The city needs to stop spending money in downtown Fresno. It’s like you’re fixing up a broken down car at your house when every day car you drive needs new tires and an oil change.

I would have loved to have gone there while it was still open, just to experience the retail space. We were Gottschalk’s people and I’ve been to the downtown Gottschalk’s many times!

At least another tax exempt church didn't take it over. So what would you do with this building? Demolish, and put in yet another parking lot? Perhaps a green space? What is your brilliant idea, besides offering critique?

A foundation has that kind of money for a building ????? But cant sponsor student scholarships without needing other business to pay for it? Or offer grants to business without asking for an arm and a leg?
