In celebration of Indigenous Peoples Day (October 12th), students enrolled in CCAS 188: Indigenous Genders and Sexualities in Abiayala, virtually welcomed leaders Alejandro (Maya K'iche') & Yoel (Maya K'iche') from @idso.xela (Asociación Iniciativa por la Diversidad Sexual de Occidente/IDSO). Students had an opportunity to learn directly from members of the Maya LGBTQIA+ community in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala about their advocacy efforts.

We are deely appreciative of all the wisdom leaders Yoel & Alejandro shared on addressing decolonization of Maya genders and sexualities with our students.
Additionally, a special thank you to interpreters Javi and Mariela for their assistance during class! ✨️

The in-class guest speakers and interpretation was sponsored through the Department of Chicana/o and Central American Studies Affirming Multivocal Humanities Mellon Grant.
