Had the pleasure of listening to a Q and A and meeting the Fred Wesley!, a Jazz trombonist or should I say, the pivotal FUNK trombonist and musical arranger of pioneering groups such as, James Brown & the JB’s, George Clinton’s Parliament Funkadelic or Bootsy Collin’s Rubber band just to mention a few.
Such a great event hosted by
@northside_records.
It was great to hear story’s of Fred’s experience working with James Brown and it’s challenges working with James and why he would end up inevitable leaving Brown in 1975; Because, in a sense he had had enough of following James’s musical endeavours after James suggested he play a rhythm more similar to Afro legend Fela Kuti, who Fred noted was majorly, yet ironically in fact influenced by James to the point that Fred heard and played it already and was ready to pursue other musical avenues; Or how Jazz drummer Art Blakey offered him a roll in his band; and what could of been should he have moved more into Jazz, than becoming the legend he has become in the funk scene, a very lively humble character that just pulls you in. Thanks for everything You have done for music Fred. You will never be forgotten.
