rotterdam worlds is just days away and I’ve been so fixated on my historical analysis of elite competition leotards through the ages, I’ve been reticent to go out of order and capture anything contemporary. But, China’s latest podium leo was too beautiful to let go by without acknowledgment.
Most nations do podium training in more casual sleeveless numbers these days but the Chinese women keep it formal with the traditional long sleeve. That wasn’t what drew me in, it is the epic filigree that if you look close is an abstract firebird with sweeping, swirling lines across the chest, paired with layers of rhinestones but amplified more so by the perfectly placed purple gradient, engineered to be softer just in the right spots across the chest and shoulders. Li-Ning’s center front red logo is the perfect contrast and placement and color.
The Chinese national team has made the unexpected the standard by consistently bucking the traditional national colors of red and yellow with colors and combinations that are vibrant and bold but not red. Outside of rotterdam, you’ll find Li-Ning, the chinese brand and title sponsor, providing green, white, black, purple, and pink based leos, with elevated details that rival and some might say outshine many of the other kits out there.
reigning beam world champ, Zhang Quingying really looked stunning in this. Her confidence and poise paired perfectly with the elegance of this design.
Best of luck to all the competitors.
