Addressing supporters on election night, Pete Buttigieg said Democratic victories could mark the moment America began moving in a new direction.

Canva is laying off 22% of its workforce, affecting up to 1,271 employees. But the way the company is handling these layoffs is getting a lot of attention.

It marks the first major round of layoffs in Canva's 13-year history. The company remains profitable, but its growth has slowed as AI continues to change the economics of the design industry.

CEO and co-founder Melanie Perkins described it as one of the hardest moments in Canva's history.

What makes this announcement stand out is the support Canva is offering departing employees:

→ At least 6 months of salary, regardless of location.
→ Up to 12 months of healthcare coverage where available.
→ Removal of the one-year equity vesting requirement for recent hires.
→ Career coaching, job search support and a year of LinkedIn Premium.
→ Employees can keep their company-issued MacBooks.
→ The chance to receive a $10,000 grant to start a business or community project, with Canva taking no equity.

Losing a job is still a difficult experience, regardless of the compensation. But the effort Canva is making to help affected employees find their next opportunity deserves recognition.

And it raises an important question for other tech leaders: if layoffs become more common as AI changes the workforce, should this level of support become the standard?

Till death do us part.
